My career journey has been interesting. I started out in the NGO space, working to fund and implement policies that affect the most vulnerable of society, such as those with communicable diseases, prisoners and sex workers in South Africa. This role exposed me to those most vulnerable and how they and others could advocate for change to accommodate and better each others lives.
I began my legal journey in Kenya, working for Anjawalla & Khanna Advocates as a trainee and after qualifying as an Advocate, I became an associate in Forensics, Investigations and Compliance. It was definitely a different choice from the commercial or litigation departments but I was curious and glad I chose it, as it has been my favourite role to date. I really enjoyed the investigative nature of the role, we would get involved in cases of financial mismanagement, suspected fraud, sexual harassment and employee misconduct with varied clients in various industries.
Educationally, I hold 3 degrees, the first in Psychology and International Relations, a post graduate LL.B degree and a Masters in International Commercial Law. I am also an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and hope to be a Solicitor in the near future. I moved to the UK to pursue my masters degree in Law and now work as a Compliance Manager at the Law firm Zeidler Group that specializes in asset management.
I have also worked in business development and as an English and history tutor. I think life is about searching for what engages you and brings out the best parts of your self, a career does not have to be straight forward or cut and dry. Be curious.
Connection to Jasiri Network
I came across Jasiri Network through friends that introduced me to the lovely Founder. Jasiri Network has changed the way I think about how we relate to each other across borders, we can make friends and networks of people within our community.
I would recommend everyone new to the UK to join Jasiri Network, you are able to make instant friends and endless resources of people who can help you with information about adjusting to the new country.
Jasiri is also a great network of professionals that you can tap into for advice and connection within various fields.
Hobbies and Interests
I have various interests, most notable Yoga, Cycling and most outdoor activities. I love to read and listen to podcasts about mainly on international and historical politics, philosophy and social justice. Fun fact about myself is I am left handed.
What do you miss most about your home country (Kenya) and what don't you miss about your home country (Kenya)
I miss the community. In Kenya, the people you have met along the way like, colleagues and classmates, become your friends, chosen family and business contacts.
Living in London is great for your career however, it is difficult and requires a lot of intentional work, to build a sustained community. I am always looking to meet new people and make new friends. I don't miss the disorganization and bureaucracy of Kenya, anything government related is hard work.
