My educational journey started in Kenya; where I quickly found out that I was pretty passionate about Math and Physics. It was therefore no surprise that I found myself gravitating towards a career in STEM. I ended up pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering in Nairobi Kenya.
Upon completing my university degree, I started my career in Safaricom (a telecommunications company) as an intern. I remember feeling: ‘this is right up my alley; the universe is certainly conspiring in my favour!. Suffice it to say, I gained a lot of knowledge and experience from the company. As my internship programme was coming to an end, I knew I had to seek out other career opportunities. I took advantage of the graduate programmes that were being advertised at the time and sent my CV to as many companies as I could. And thus, my career with KPMG East Africa began as a graduate trainee. I was part of the Advisory team, within IT Risk Consulting.
After 2.5 years of growth, I decided to apply to KPMG UK, the London office. As fate would have it, I passed my interview and relocated to London. This has been one of my biggest and best decisions yet.
Travelling to the UK was as a result of my insatiable need to experience life outside of my comfort zone. As someone who genuinely loves to travel, moving to London was more exciting than it was nerve wrecking. I have been in the UK for a year and a half now, it’s been an incredible experience so far. If time was rewound, I wouldn’t change a single thing.
If I could speak to my younger self; I would assure her that everything was going to work out for her own good. 😊
Hobbies and Interests
Travelling, right off the bat! A change in latitude always helps my attitude as they say. I also happen to be an adrenaline junkie, I am a huge fan of zip lining and bungee jumping.
Fun Fact about myself is I am a part time singer and a part time French tutor. I find it a great way to decompress and make use of my otherwise obsolete high school French.
What has been the biggest challenge and biggest win you've experienced having moved from your home country (Kenya) to your current country of residence (UK)
My biggest challenge in the UK was learning how to navigate the Winter. I must admit I am getting better at it. However, my first winter experience was not pretty; I simply wasn’t used to the freezing temperatures.
My biggest win – where to begin? The realization that I can grow and thrive in a different country other than my birth country is easily my biggest win. The universe has continued to reaffirm my decision and I am nothing short of grateful. Getting a chance to travel to countries I once dreamed of is a close second – planning my next destination as I type this, haha.
Lastly and certainly not least, meeting brilliant humans from all over the globe has been a huge highlight for me. Suddenly the world feels so small. I have learned that no matter where one is from, we’re all having a human experience.
